Looking for Backup solution for VMWare environment
We've started adding VMWare servers to our data center, and we need a backup solution that works. We'll have a mix of ESX4.0 and ESX3.5 hosts along with vCenter 4.0. Host will have Windows 2003, Windows 2008, RedHat 4.x and 5.x. Some hosts will have MS SQL 2005 and Oracle DB. We have TSM deployed but it needs major upgrade (v5.3.1). I am looking at VDR, VCB and third party softwares like Veeam and esXpress. What are your experiences and recommendations? What's your experience with TSM backup with or without VCB?

Software/Hardware used:
Windows 2003, Windows 2008, Red Hat 4.x and 5.x, MS SQL 2005 and Oracle DB

Answer Wiki:
<a href="http://www.vizioncore.com/products/vRangerPro/index.php">Vranger Pro </a> may be a good solution for you. We use vranger to back up our vm servers to disk on the vranger server which is retained for 3 days, then that server is backed up to tape by TSM. Restoring from TSM then restoring the vm from vranger is a very easy process on both counts. ----- Keep in mind that for the SQL Server and Oracle servers (and Exchange and anything else with a database) you'll want to rely on normal backup and restore operations (backup SQL to disk, then backup those backup files to tape), otherwise your backups won't be consistent. As for backing up the other VMs directly, you want to use something which supports consolidated backup of the hosts.

Unitrends supports VMware and actually has a free trial version you can download. Their all-in-one backup appliance includes software so you only have one vendor, and provides backup and disaster recovery that starts at $2495 ($75 per month with a three-year lease).
