We are running Windows 2000 Professional.
Following a routine anti-virus/malware scan, my users and I cannot login.
We get the login screen, enter username and password. The computer loads our settings, shows (briefly) wallpaper and icons, then saves our settings and returns to the login screen.
I have access to files via a live Linux (runs in RAM) distro but cannot find the solution anywhere. 'Repair' doesn't change anything and web searches suggest that re-install may not either.
Can you help us please?
Thank you.

As RichS is asking, and I will add to his questions, standalone machine or member of domain, just one machine, or a few or all of your machines? Have you tried logging into safe mode, both with and without network support? Last known good configuration?
If you are on a domain can you log into your server(s)?
Do you only have W2K machines or do you have some with newer OS’s installed on them. If the latter are these machines also affected?
