If our domain controller goes down on our Windows Server 2003 Active Directory network what needs to be done to have the backup domain controller kick into action? Can we have them doing load balancing in a perfect scenario?
There really is no backup domain controller in AD. All DCs should have global catalog role in order to perform authentication tasks. All DCs can handle all roles. Worst case scenario you would have to use adsiedit or ntdsutil to seize roles that were assigned to the failed server and move them to the other DC.
