Answer Wiki:
Most people will tell you that the biggest advantage is security. The truth is there are less attacks made on Linux systems than Windows. Attackers want to go big...and Windows distribution is big. Other advantages include size (of OS), speed (depending and debateable), and energy savings (some Linux distros claim to run equivalent functions with substantially less power usage. To me, an OS choice is based on use. If you are working in a more hostile environment (security), always on the internet, or the like, the seemingly less vulnerable Linux might be a good choice. If you are a seasoned Windows user however, keep in mind the change is substantial and may be a bit daunting at first. Perhaps you could try a small version of linux like FaunOS that you can boot off a USB key before you wipe your whole drive. You'll be able to formulate a good idea of what Linux is all about and then decide. Hope this helps! -Schmidtw ******************************************* One other advantage is the price. But the advantages/disadvantages depends on what you need or what is the role this machine will play. -Carlosdl
