Happy new year! I'd like to know which is the best or recommended Linux distro for an older Dell laptop. I'd like to preserve the wireless networking function of the Intel processor.

Software/Hardware used:
Dell Inspiron 600m

i think you should install the Ubuntu 10.10 LTS. Since it has a menu navigation and the ease with which you can adjust everything, is just great. The included applications, I find enough in principle to re-install and I have really nothing to the HTML editor. Thunderbird instead of Evolution would be nice, but no matter . Clean, uncluttered interface – all in all, a good all-round package. So there is no need for adjustment. Moreover its free and simple you can directly download the Ubuntu 10.10 from ubuntu.com

Depending on how old the machine is and how much resources it has, you might want to consider using Xubuntu, which uses the Xfce window management system, which is small and lightweight when compared to GNOME and KDE (it uses less memory and fewer cpu cycles).

For Older Dell Laptop, u may go for SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10.1 with safe settings or u may choose for slackware
