LDF files changing format

Recently I was sent by email...a LDF file which I was told to drag onto my desktop and then I should be able to access it. It didn't work because when I dragged it it changed from a LDF file to just an image IE. like a page with a down turned corner. I think it said PNG. The sender was puzzled as it had never happened before. Does anyone know why this happened or what to do to correct it? We have deleted everything and hope to start from scratch Monday. I am a novice and not a technical person being a 73 year old gran. Not sure if I am allowed to join this site but really need help. The senders system is Windows 7 and mine is Vista.

What are you expecting to happen? What are you wanting to do with a .LDF file? What is it supposed to contain? (There are numerous kinds of .LDF files.) . A .PNG file is an image, a picture, that would open in some image viewer program. . Tom
