Launching PC documents from iSeries

We have a function where a PC document (xls, doc, pdf, html) can be launched from an RPG program using Client Access (CL that does a strpco then a strpccmd pgm/path). Its hugely useful for product specs and data sheets but we've been hitting some problems with path lengths - the entire path cannot be more than 123 characters. Can anyone suggest a way around this or another way of doing it?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Hi,
What about utilizing windows shotcuts pointing to some ‘launching’ folder with short path?
Maybe with some catalog in DB/400 database in form:
long document path, launching document with short path.

Just ideas which, I hope, may be usefull.

Jakobr

The cmd parameter is fixed length. So you cannot specify a longer path name on the iSeries. But as suggested, you could point to a PC shortcut.

To complete, previous answer, I suggest that shortcut can also be an IFS file or QDLS file named *.BAT or *.CMD Localisation of shortcut is depending of complexity to transmit parameters. If there are complex, then generate dynamicaly the command file in the 400 then run it from STRPCCMD ISSUE : all PC must localize the 400 with the same network disk name. (I have never try STRPDCCMD with a direct net name such as my400myshare...mycommand.cmd)

You can also (if running Win95 or greater) use this... start pathname/todocument The start command will use the registry to find the program to launch the document. example: "start networkservermonthendrpt.xls" will launch Excel and then load the monthendrpt.xls spreadsheet.
