All black pages on most lasers represent two possible issues. One: The laser scanner remains on during print rotation and command, which should usually issue an error code, or a series of error LED's on the control panel in the 6L case. Two: The high voltage power supply is not properly charging the drum, (-600V) and toner is attracted to the entire drum surface, which displays no error code. This printer is old, if you are not having multi-feed issues yet, wait a week, it is going to happen on this printer. The Hp LaserJet 1320, or the 1160 is an economical choice, however, just as the 6L, it is a throw away. Most of my training class clients will not repair the smaller cheaper lasers, they will replace them.

Just a quick comment from a practical standpoint -- even laser printers have become very inexpensive these days. So I'd advise you not to spend too much time on these things; if you can't fix it in an hour or two, chuck and consider replacing it. In most cases, it doesn't take much of your time to be more valuable than this printer. I'm not saying I approve of a disposable-oriented culture, that's just the way it seems to work out...

thank guys, just a small input,I did try its catriadge in another printer and its working fine and another catriadge of a working printer to this one ,and the result is still the same so I rule out catriadge problem. However, there is another laserjet 6l that is no longer used(its pick up roller are damaged) that I can be able to get some replacements from.

The issue can ONLY be from the toner or the formatter board/power supply (possibly the laser but I don't think so in this case). Things to check, ensure that contacts are clean and free of dirt/toner/other, the cover is in good condition.

If you have another toner available that is the easiest thing to check. It may have been exposed to too much light.

After replacing the toner I would open the cover again and check to see if any of the connectors came off. There will be a high voltage power cable(s) that runs from the power supply to the Drum connectors. Unfortunately I don't have a manual for that printer so I cannot tell you exactly where it is.

Hope this helps.

I agree that the printer may need a new drum or the cartridge may be bad. There is a place on the web called fixyourownprinter.com that will let you troubleshoot your problem and tell you what parts you may need. When you purchase the parts they also send either a cd or video with the parts that gives good explanations of how to repair the printer. I have used it on an old HP 4 Laser printer and was able to repair the printer for about half the cost of a local store.

Hi Joshuu.....

Me again. Depending on where you are located and due to the age of the printer model, you may have difficulty obtaining parts. The HP support web site does list parts diagrams and such, but I noticed that osme parts are no longer available especially if you are in a location that uses 220 volt electrical. It would probably be a good thing to try to convince management to replace it. I do know how difficult that can be. I too work in an environment where funds are very hard to come by, but efficiency and ability to perform the work has to be stressed and if you can use a good business case, they will usually see the light.

Best of luck,
Paul

Joshuu is in a situation like mine. I am from a third world country where resources are very scarce. U can not justify to your boss buying a new printer until you have proven, in this case that the printer is beyond repair or that the cost of repair is close to the cost of a new printer.

Anyway back to help joshuu. There are two possibilities, either the cartridge is now fault and needs replacement or the fuser unit and film is damaged. If the fuser unit is damaged you gotta plan on replacing the printer, becoz i know for sure the cost of the fuser unit is like 75% of the cost of a new printer of the same range.
GOOD LUCK.

I am in agreement with previous post regarding the drum unit. Take it out, Check that the drum unit does not have any paper or other object in it by opening the shutter on the bottom. Check to be sure there is no paper or objects (paper clips, staples) in the transport/image transfer area (under were the drum unit sets), then reinsert the drum unit making sure it is fully inserted and correctly. If that fails, replace the drum unit, if that fails, it is going to to probably be a problem with the printers logic board or High Voltage transformer and you will more than likely need to have it repaired and that will probably cost more time/money than it is worth.

Good Luck
