 LaCie Firewire Drive keeps disconnecting
I'm having a problem with a LaCie 2GB Firewire drive. It disconnects at random times when it is in use. I have another LaCie 1.5GB Firewire drive connected to the same card and server that has no problems. The LaCie firmware updater gives me a BSOD on my server when I try to use it. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Answer Wiki:
See if you can update the firmware on another machine, maybe the server OS is getting in the way, and then see if it is available on the server. If not you may want to go to LaCie support and see if they have an option for you.

Thanks for the input. LaCie support is telling me to check basic connectivity like cables and power, so I’ll give it another go with another computer.

LaCie external drives which use an external (i.e., not in the drive enclosure) power-supply have a surprisingly high failure rate of their external power supplies. Often, they exhibit intermittent problems (due to the voltages being out of spec) before failing completely.

Thanks. I had a feeling the hard drive got fried in some way. USB is working for now, but we are considering options to replace it.

I did the firmware update. It seemed to cure the issue.

It was a bad hard drive controller. I had to salvage the hard drives and get a new firewire drive. StevenG7 was right, I also heard a high pitch sound from the power supply which I couldn’t hear in the server room.
