I am able to use Wi-Fi on my surface tablet but unable to access the internet. Keep getting unexpected error has occurred and that troubleshoot is unable to complete task. Have checked with Vodafone and the modem is connecting. Also states that on the tablet. Tablet was working perfectly until following a storm two weeks ago. The only other problem is that McAfee has run out and no virus protection. I can't afford to renew McAfee and windows will not let me delete McAfee and install any thing else. Ideas please.

Software/Hardware used:
Have windows RT8 running tablet.

Check that airplane mode sets as Off.  Also check either there is 'Limited' word showing under network name wifi. If possible, check the same connection with another device like smartphone/ tab/ pc/ laptop.

It may be possible it can detect your wifi router but if you have a separate modem, may need to be restarted. I have had it happen a few times at home I can connect the wifi but not the internet. Power off the modem and restart it and it fixes itself.

A good next step would be to test another computer, ideally one that's hard-wired into the modem via Ethernet. There free anti-malware tools but I (and many others) have found that you get what you pay for. Lookup Webroot on Amazon - it's pretty inexpensive and would be hard not to justify given the risks of using a computer unprotected.

As far as my knowledge, there is no need of 3rd party antivirus program for Windows RT OS based system. It has a strong built-in anti virus that can protect itself. For more info, please link here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee692089%28v=surface.10%29.aspx
