You are really the only one who can answer this. The big question is, do you want to move out of a technical role and into a business role? If you do then this might be the right leap for you. If you want to remain technical then a Vendor Management role isn't what you are looking for. Vendor Management is a lot of dealing with contracts and working with the vendor for scheduling and pretty much 0 technical work.

Thanks Mrdenny….

That is a big question for me. Sometime I feel i have done enough of coding now its time for management see the other side to coin and then it feels that do i have a good career path on the other side. Where would Vendor Management lead me?

What to do ??

almost a year ago I was confronted with this same situation, although in reverse. I was at a position that had a big vendor management component to it, and I was offered a project lead developer position, very technical. I ultimately decided that for the time being and for what was being offerered to me in terms of remunieration, I would rather build a system focusing on programming and design than manage contracts and make phone calls. However, management was already in my background, and I felt in order to gain more credibility as an IT professional, I needed to spend some real time in the trenches. To use a cowboy analogy, I didn’t want to be the IT guy who as “all hat and no cattle”

My colleagues at large companies said that vendor management was really the way to go, but I the more I see, the more I am beginning to believe that their insight is somewhat limited by the fact that they had only ever worked for big companies.

Like Mr Denny says, there are a lot of things to weigh when making the switch. Ultimately, I went with 2 things – 1. what I wanted to do 2. what would add to the advancement of my careeer in terms of experience and salary.
