ITKE spam

I'm just about fed up with the spam garbage allowed through this site.

Twenty questions show up today on the first page of the IT Questions list. Two are duplicates. Two seem more or less appropriate where an actual IT-related question comes from someone who seems to have a legitimate problem or question. Five seem mostly suited for some other 'beginner' forum. Eleven are pure spam.

I'm on the edge of deciding that this site is no longer worth my time. The volume of questions is low enough to be moderated. Until the junk is under control, the volume will never get better nor will new participants be attracted who have useful knowledge to exchange.

The responsiveness to member concerns is practically none. The Edit My Account page mostly doesn't work. The Blog Roll has become worthless. I haven't managed to find out in six weeks of trying if I can get e-mail alerts or not. I've never seen a single response to any question about how this blasted editor actually works.

It might just be time to end participation until some evidence appears that there are people somewhere behind the site who actually care about it.

Tom

Hi Tom,

I completely understand your frustration, and apologize for the spam. We go through the site regularly and do our best to delete it as quickly as we see it, but, particularly on Monday mornings, we have a backlog.

We should have an upgrade come out over the next several weeks that helps us better manage the problem even as spam attacks increase.

The Edit My Account problems, which, yes, have been an issue for a long, long time, should be completely resolved later this month with an upgrade.

I’ll look into your alerts problem now and try and figure out what’s going wrong. We’ve had a number of users lose alerts updates, but have been generally able to get them working again.

What is worse now about the blog roll page? We did some updates so that it shows the most relevant, new posts, but if you were using it in another way, we’d like to make sure it’s easy to connect with the writers you’re interested in.

Thank you for the candid feedback, and please let me know about the blog roll issue.

I completely understand your frustration, and apologize for the spam. More on that in a minute. I saw your reply a few days ago, but this is my first chance to reply. Some weeks there's just too much to do. Before anything else, though, it's good to see someone from ITKE trying to communicate with members. We should have an upgrade come out over the next several weeks that helps us better manage the problem even as spam attacks increase.... That has good sounding potential. If it makes as much difference as the one a few months ago that gave the performance increase, it will be very welcome. The Edit My Account problems, which, yes, have been an issue for a long, long time, should be completely resolved later this month with an upgrade. For me, that became an issue because I wanted to see how /spam/ posts affected mailings. It's one thing to have garbage posts cluttering up the AnswerWiki; it's a very different matter if they're basically being relayed into member e-mail inboxes. I tried to set my account through that page to receive updates, but nothing showed up. A couple weeks ago, I tried using the 'Subscribe to alerts' function on the ITAnswers page, but it hasn't worked yet either. So I don't have any idea what other members see. Maybe that's good because I'd be pretty upset if my mailbox started collecting spam and I had no way to shut it off except sending ITKE mail to my Junk folder. ...and do our best to delete it as quickly as we see it... I don't mind putting my 'Vote to delete' on every problem question. Not much I can do about 'Comments' though. And if they all go out as e-mails anyway...? Besides, is there much point in cleaning up the AnswerWiki if members abandon the site due to e-mail problems? What is worse now about the blog roll page? We did some updates so that it shows the most relevant, new posts,... I'm not sure what the blog roll page is. I only see the Blogroll panel on the ITAnswers page on the right-hand side at the bottom. Previously it would always show a small blurb about each of recent blog posts. Now it's just an unchanging list of blogs. There's never anything eye-catching to interest me in clicking through anymore. It's the same every day, so it just becomes invisible. I previously would see a half dozen or so blurbs each day that I'd check out. Since my only notice of anything new is through updates to the ITAnswers page, that's the only place I know to look. Regardless, thanks for taking time to respond. And good luck on any updates. Tom
