Hi,

Is there a tool to automate transfer of source and objects from one iSeries to another?

Is there a tool to compare two source codes from different iSeries box?

Thank you

A disk synchronization tool can do that..
I mean, you specify the source / destination machines.
specify your set of libraries and what type of object would you like to synchronize.. and it’ll do the rest. (it will ensure that both libraries are fully matched, including source codes of course).

I am not aware of free ones because smart sync tools detect changes based on the AS400 Journal files for each object in the specified library, then transfers it to the destination. I guess they’re it’ll be hard to find a free one that will do such thing.

If the task is simpler (Just to automatically transfer say a savfile from one machine to another), you can create a CL that will do what you want, and run it in a batch job that runs daily at a certain time.

On the other side (the destination machine), create another CL that will restore all the objects of the save file sent from that other machine) and set it to run daily say 1 hour after the first CL is called.. (depending of course on the size of your data.. etc).

i believe you can use aldon or thenon to do that.

Such tools are generally called Change Management Systems (CMS). In addition to the Aldon product, there is also TURNOVER from SoftLanding Systems. I've used both of those. I'm not sure about another product named Integrity from MKS Software (or ptc.com ). I thought it was previously called Implementer, which I have also used -- but I don't really know. I'm pretty sure that others can be found. I think those have been the "big 3" for iSeries. As far as 'tools' go, standard save and restore can be used. You might look into using the optionally installed ObjectConnect option of i OS (or OS/400). It allows direct save/restore of objects between iSeries systems without needing to manage intermediate savefiles. For comparison of source members, PDM includes the CMPPFM (Compare Physical File Member) command. It can be used directly by command or by option 54=Compare on a list of files or members. The WDSC product (or the RAD successors) includes source member comparisons on the PC. Tom

Thank you everyone. I was refering to the Change Management tools where we could track any changes in the application such as newly developed/revised applications (e.g. from Development to Test / Producton). I'll check on this tools. For the source code compare, I've come across the command but haven't check it yet. Just a follow-up question, can it compare two source code from different iSeries Box.

I’ve come across the command but haven’t check it yet. Just a follow-up question, can it compare two source code from different iSeries Box. The WDSC product can do this easily enough, but CMPPFM can't. CMPPFM doesn't accept DDM files. Technically, the Qshell cmp utility can compare source members between systems through the /QFileSvr.400 file system. But differences might show up often in the ChangeDate columns (or the SeqNbr columns). Tom

Hi Tom, Is there a specific version of WDSC where compare is available? I have a WDSC 5.1.2 but can see the compare menu. Thanks

I have a WDSC 5.1.2 but can see the compare menu. I found a WDSC 5.1.2 on an old PC. It does have 'Compare...' available, but I didn't take time to study it. Select (highlight) any two source members, right-click and select 'Compare...' from the pop-up menu. How well it works, how to make sense of results, etc., will need to be learned from WDSC help or wherever you might find it. (I might have time some evening or weekend.) Tom
