The PC era might be finished as the latest numbers from Gartner and IDC showed no signs of improvement in the market. IDC reported a 11.4% drop in the second quarter compared to the same period last year while Gartner reported a 10.9% drop in its global Q2. This marks the fifth consecutive quarterly decline, which is the longest in PC history. Are we seeing the end of the PC era?

I think we’ll see the end of the PC era when all demand goes away. Right now, I just don’t see that happening.

Sure, there’s likely a larger market for the latest and greatest cutesy/novelty items. Serious computer professionals need serious computers so I suspect (hope) that doesn’t make traditional desktops and laptops “go away”. If they do, that’ll be the indicator that it’s time for me to retire, or just speak for a living. :)

I believe we seeing the end of the PC era as the "Top Dog",. but it will be around for many more years. Our hand held devices are now the major player but those devices as we know them today will also run it course

There will always be PC's just as there are still more minicomputers and mainframes than there ever were before. Something else now has greater impact.
