Is there a good Windows based SMTP Server replacement?

I am dying to replace the Windows Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service with a different (low or no cost) SMTP server. If not, then I'd love to be able to gain more control over the MS SMTP Server. I need to be able to watch the connections in and out in real time - hopefully to be able to determine if my server is compromised. I am having to rebuild my SMTP server every few weeks because it gets bogged down and the queue gets bloated (2000+ e-mails waiting). I cannot find anything that positively says "I'm compromised" - so I really don't know how to secure it better so the problem doesn't happen again. I would like a fairly secure non-MS SMTP server replacement - or some really good sugestions. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!!

You might want to consider a spam filtering software to accomplish your goals. Setting it up between the outside world and your server and then monitoring the filter would both cut down on the number of emails in your mail system and give you some visibility. I use a product called Xwall, but it is for Exchange server. There are a ton of filtering products available.

Thank you for the suggestions - I'm looking at Mercury currently. My system is an external SMTP gateway that forwards incoming mail to our Exchange server. We're using GFI MailEssentals and GFI MailSecurity for our AntiSpam. I just wish there was a way to look at the current SMTP queue and be able to tell which e-mails are actively being serviced and how far along they are, etc... Whoever thought up spam should be drawn and quartered and all the pieces shot.

If you are interested to have a windows based SMTP gateway I suggest you to try MailScan for SMTP by MWTI. The website is http://www.mwti.net I am currently using this software. Trust me you can do just anything. Regards Nazrul
