Our SearchNetworkingChannel.com expert says that it might be best to hold off recommending Power over Ethernet to networking clients until the 802.3an standard gets widely adopted. What do you think? Is there any benefit to going with Power over Ethernet now?

I think it is the high time to go for it. Somewhere somebody has to take the initiative by selling the benefits. If all goes well, how it is going to burn your fingers later is not understood.

The benefits could be – single cable giving both – bandwidth and power, and on top of it the single vendor is going to support which again is better for an organization. I don’t see it too far coming into practical.

Small devices like phones, barcode scanners are really the only types of devices that POE is really useful for. Unless you need those in your environment, why pay for the equipment?

Labnuke, you left out one of the best uses for PoE: wireless access points. When you're going to mount a device up in a ceiling or on a wall, it's really nice not to have to hunt around for an electrical outlet, and you save a lot of money by not calling the electrician!

Thanks for the catch. You are correct with that valid use for POE.

POE swithces have saved my company thousands of dollars by not having to pay electrical contractors to supply power in the rafters of some old wharehouses. It is the next best thing since sliced bread when it comes to wireless access points.
