Would it be possible for me to install antivirus on my external hard drive?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

You can install it there but if the drive is not attached to the computer it will most likely cause problems as well as defeat the purpose of installing an antivirus program that may not be present. Basically if there is anything I want to run and load every time I boot my computer it goes on the internal HD. The other factor is performance. Anything running from an external drive will be much slower.

Probably possible, but what did you want to achieve to do this. If you install AV on your external HDD, then it is necessary to connect to the laptop/desktop to run/scan. While you can scan/clean viruses just connected to a laptop/desktop (where an AV already installed) and or check for viruses. On external HDD it takes unnecessary space and you can not get so much benefit. If the external HDD infected by viruses you can clean them by connecting to a laptop/desktop where an AV installed.

Also if you determined to install an AV on external HDD, you can consider a portable antivirus like MS safety scanner/ avira PC cleaner etc.

You can usually install software anywhere on a computer. That said, certain anti-malware software might require being on the boot drive since that's where much of the protection takes place.

Are you simply looking to just scan your external hard drive?
