 Internet web mail implementation
I'm looking for some feedback on implementing an iNotes website for extrernal users (no VPN). The recommendation we've been given is to put a front end server on the internet with a DWA Redirect page which redirects users through an open HTTPS port on the firewall to an internal mail server. I was thinking about implementing a web server and just replicating the databases outside to avoid punching a hole in the FW. Any thoughts? Regards, Darryl

Answer Wiki:
I would recommend that you use an application layer gateway or an SSL VPN Gateway/reverse proxy rather than placing a server directly on the Internet / passing traffic unchecked through your firewall. The additional layer provided by the gateway will protect the server from direct attack as well as the application from being hacked. Check out: F5 firepass or a product from Whale.
