Often times many consumers get these e-mails from Nigeria, Russia, China and so on purporting a long drawn out story about a deceased king and so on. They can be caught by looking at their headers, but I've been told sometimes they use fake e-mail addresses. Is their a fool proof way to identify these crooks using their IP addresses? Any tricks, tips or recommendations on how to nab these people? Turning them into abuse or spoof at the ISP address seems to shut them down, but is their a better way to identify these characters? If so, notify me at bigrickjr57@aol.com or send it via snail mail to: Ricky L. Johansen, Jr., Ph.D., Internet Investigations, P.S., 519 Washington Street SE #405, Olympia, WA 98501-1339 Thank you

why can’t you log the ip address and do a reverse lookup on the ip and see who the regidtar is and report the offending ip address to the registered domain isp and their records will show what account used the ip on that date and they can take corrective action against that person’s account.

I think that if ALL major email servers used a reverse lookup to verify the email where it's actually coming from, we'd get rid of a large part of these abuse/spam emails. Of course, we all would have some work to do: create the proper PTR record on our zone for the MX record.
