If you are willing to get your hands a bit dirty with proxying and details reports, you could try running a program like Burp http://portswigger.net/burp/ that will get you details on exactly where the slowdown is

This is a tell-tale sign of malware. Have you checked for that using multiple scanners?

This freezing issue could be caused by several issues.  Check to make sure the Java Plugin for IE is up to date.  This may cause Java issues if the website is using an outdated version of Java.  Check to make sure the flash player plugin is up to date.  Check to make sure that Anitvirus Plugin that checks for incoming Malware / Viruses is working properly.  Check your system for viruses / Malware, and lastly clear the history cache and the other caches on the system and then try it.  Also if your system is checking incoming emails it can and does cause the browser to hang.  The one that I have found to work best is keeping the caches clear of all historical information as the AV / Antimalware spends a lot time rescaning it each time the cache has more history added to it.  Lastly have you tried using another browser to see if the issue occurs with say Firefox.
