Hi, Anyone seen this before? Every time I open a new browser window in IE6 running Windows XP Home Edition, the one that's open at the time is closed by the system, so only one browser window can be open at any given time. Regular windows work as they're supposed to I can open as many as I want simultaneously. The problem seems to be with Internet Explorer only. Your help is appreciated.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

My first guess would be spyware or a retro virus.

I’ve seen several that will close IE when you go to download.com for example. This may be a more extreme simplistic example.

Not to say that I’m right, but I trust my sense of paranoia most of the time.

Go to another PC with a CD burner, and download stinger (http:vil.nai.com/vil/stinger) and also download Spybot Search & Destroy and HijackThis from www.download.com. Then burn the CD and put it on the suspect PC to clean it

If that doesn’t work, then please write back with more details. I don’t promise that I’m right, but I can assure you that this approach has worked well enough that I spend my own time doing it first.

Bob

Thanks Bob, I ran different anti spywares and didn't fix it. As it turns out Yahoo messenger 7.0 was the offending software, I think there may be a setting or install option that caused the problem. Once I uninstalled Yahoo, things got back to normal. Luis

Hi, Same thing happened to me once. If you haven't installed IE6 SP1 and all the latest fixes and security patches, I recommend you do so. If it doesn't resolve the problem, open the one browser instance and go to www.pandasoftware.com and try their online scan. Best antivirus I've used so far. Malware must be residing in your computer. If it doesn't work still, try reinstalling IE6.

It's always a good idea to apply the current service packs for Windows and IE, but you could also try: IE menu> Tools> Options, advanced tab, scroll down to the option "reuse windows for launching shortcuts", uncheck it and say ok.
