Ref: the first reply… actually it would be your IP address that would get a 169.xxx address if DHCP wasn’t working….but I really doubt you’re even at that stage of troubleshooting..yet.
Do you have an Internet account of some type to connect to? IE, as High Speed DSL, or cable account/service, or even a dial up account.
You mention LAN, so I would assume you’re referring to a high speed service.
You need an account first..confirm you have an account with a user id and password from your service provider.
You will also recv a modem of some type from your service provider, either a DSL or CABLE modem, whichever service you decide to go with.
Plug in, and it should work out of the box.. if it doesn’t then you proceed to the next stage of troubleshooting.
As for connecting via CELL PHONE and/or ANOTHER COMPUTER, short answer is YES, you can use them, but trying to explain that configuration here would be challenging.

one option would be to eanle Internet Connection Sharing on the computer that is connected to the internet and then make sure that you computer and the computer that is connnected to the internet are connected to the same hub or switch. The computer with ICS (Intrernet Connection Sharing)should issue the IP Addresses via DHCP and allow addtional users to use its Internet connection to get on the internet. Hope this helps
