could anyone describe the equipment of an internet cafe and the purpose of each one?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Typical Internet Cafes have a combination of wired and wireless access. The wired access is typically a PC with a NIC card, using Ethernet cable of some flavor plugged into a smart switch or router (depending on the number of devices), which would then connect to a firewall. The internet connection would plug into the firewall as well. The wireless setup would be an antenna (access point)in place of a PC but is typically connected back to the same type of equipment. Cisco’s website has some really great diagrams to look at depending on the number of host you are trying to connect and what your trying to do with very specific breakdowns about the role of each device. I would add a management system for accounting/billing/connectivity control, loaded with a package designed for internet cafes. This would give you a means to control and manage access, including billing, timing and accounting if you will be charging for access.

Spadasoe, you mention a management system. Have you any experience of any in particular? I am looking to set up something similar to this but basically for a village shared resource, not commercial. I have no problem with the networking side, I do however lack the experience of logging and access control software in this scenario a) to understand basically how to set it up and b) what's available either free or as a low cost package. Is this perhaps set up on a proxy with all DHCP pointing to the proxy as the gateway or somesuch?
