I'm working on a Dell PowerEdge-2800 server running on Windows 2000 Server. At present there are 2 partitions C: for system & D: (600GB) for data on a PERC 4e/Di card configured as Raid-5. We are planning to install a PERC-5e card with Dell MD1000 external storage having two virtual disks of 1.8TB each configured in Raid-5. Our goal is to expand the existing data disk D: from 600GB to 4.2TB. Is it possible to do this, since the disks are on different controllers? If it is possible, is there a risk of data loss during expansion? Any advice would be highly appreciated.

This is possible since Windows thinks these drives are locally attached. You can expand the volume using the Windows Disk manager, but that will cause you to loose all existing data on that drive. Otherwise, you can use a third party partition software like partition magic server to expand the partition.
