Installing a program more than once from disc

I would like clarification or explanation on this issue.  I have a disc that allows me to use a license three times.  I have used it twice and am preparing to install the software on a third computer.  My boss said that I should know that we would be getting rid of one of the computers soon and should save that third load for the new computer.  I informed her that while I would notify the vendor of the action, the disc itself has no way of noting the number of loads.  She disagrees.  Outside of verification over a network using the number of times a key was used, is there any way for a program to know how many times it has been loaded? Thank you.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

It would depend on whether the program “calls home” during the installation process. You are correct in that the disk istelf is not intuitive, it is read-only. But if the program upon installation “calls home” to report into the vendor then the installation of that key will be updated from the vendor’s side.

Really the only ways for an app to "know" this is if it calls home over the Internet or if it's reinstalled on the same system and it recognizes some previous traces of itself in the registry, etc.
