How can I reset the admin password for a Mac, when I don't have the password? I tried recovery partition, but the drive was not listed. I also tried unlocking the drive, but there was no 'unlock' option. I am also willing to erase the drive to solve the problem but this option is also not working for me under Disk Utility. Help appreciated!

You have tried almost all the way. But have you tried with password hint, that you supplied at the time of creation? Yes, you must remember your password hints that can help to resolve this issue. Or if you have Apple ID (hope you must have), it can help to reset password using this ID. Try to login and keep entering password until you see a message saying that you can reset your password using Apple ID. At this stage, you can supply the correct ID (hope you remember this ID) then follow onscreen instructions to enter your the ID & create a new password.
