That would be the parity bit. The value of this bit can be determined either by using an odd parity (if an even number of 1s in the byte, the parity bit is 1; if not, then it is 0) or an even parity (if an even number of 1s in the byte, the parity bit is 0; if not, then it is 1). 

This method is known to be limited because there are many factors that might corrupt bits without changing the number of 1s or 0s in a byte.
