Lately, my Exchange Information Store hangs up and Outlook clients give a message saying that it can't connect to Exchange (Exchange 2003--Microsoft Server 2003 OS). There are no errors or warnings being logged in EventViewer that would clarify anything. Just a lot of ActiveSync errors due to mobile phones not being able to connect either.

I have to do a taskkill and force Information Store to stop and then restart it. Once I restart, everything works beautifully.

How could I be proactive in finding out what could be causing this 'hanging' issue?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

One of the first things I would recommend as a matter of course is to always get it up to date with all Microsoft Exchange updates as the issue may be resolved in a rollup or service pack update.

As has already been mentioned, the first line of attack on this problem is to ensure you are up to date with all Exchange patches and updates. Doing so can cure many problems. Do you have A/V running on the Exchange server? If so exclude at least the MDBDATA directory if not the whole Exchange directory from scanning. What had changed on your server prior to this happening? Perhaps you can undo the change to determine if it was the cause.
