DNS Issue
We have several websites that are hosted on our Systemi. We have tried to set them up so that a user can access them with or without including www. as part of the URL. The IP addresses and port assignments for all of the sites are identical. All of the sites are defined with Apache server directives looking like the following.
<VirtualHost ip1.ip2.ip3.ip4:port>
ServerName www.firstwebsite.com
DirectoryIndex FirstWebsite.htm
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost ip1.ip2.ip3.ip4:port>
ServerName firstwebsite.com
DirectoryIndex FirstWebsite.htm
</VirtualHost>

.
<VirtualHost ip1.ip2.ip3.ip4:port>
ServerName www.lastwebsite.com

DirectoryIndex LastWebsite.htm
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost ip1.ip2.ip3.ip4:port>
ServerName lastwebsite.com
DirectoryIndex LastWebsite.htm
</VirtualHost>
Our problem is this. On one of the sites (and just one), the user can enter the address without including www., and the requested page is displayed.  However, including www. in the address yields a blank page on the browser. We do not experience this phenomenon with the other sites. All return the requested page, whether or not www. is included as part of the address. We have tried (and failed) using multiple browsers (IE, Chrome, FireFox). The issue is compounded by the following factoids.
  • This problem only manifested itself in the last couple of weeks.  Up until then, all websites worked as expected.
  • There have been no changes made on the Systemi (i.e. Apache server directives).
  • We have asked our network/infrastructure personnel to help research/analyze the problem, and their conclusion is “it’s the AS400”.
We have been getting a large number of complaints from users unable to access the site, especially those who bookmarked the address that included the www. Whether this problem has been caused by (or can be resolved on) “the AS400” or not, I need help. Since my in-house research has not solved this problem, I am going to the out-house. Can anyone offer any insight or possible solution to this problem? THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS YOU CAN OFFER!!
