I would like to know the basic steps I should take in implementing a DBMS for my company?

The first step is to understand what the last step is suppose to be.
You need to have requirements from management as to what information is to included in the DBMS.
How do you receive it?
How is it used?
What are required pieces?
If your asking this question, I would suggest you have a consultant come in and give you some help.
Proper planning is critical.
