What type of records are you asking about? If IFS, then certainly this can be done using the <a href="http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r4/topic/apis/unix2.htm">IFS APIs.</a> If database, then are variable length fields sufficient or do you really need variable length records? If database variable length records, who/what will be processing them?
