This cud happen due to
a. Spyware / Adware - Just run any good spyware removal tool
b. Hardware limitations (using low end system with less memory and pretty old HDD) - Check if you system has enough memory and do run a defragment and scandisk on your system
c. issue with ie taking too much of page memory also too much page faults and system crashing ie process leading to ie closure. (This happens due to pop us, activex installers etc from the website you are trying to reach, infected websites that causes virus to load on system.)

Just chekc if you have upto date security patches installed too for IE.

I agree, it sounds like some sort of malicious code injection causing a DoS. I'd check that computer's hosts file and see if that link it being redirected to sumptin evil. also try a DNS query for that link from that computer and then from another one and see if you get the same result. Use a no install program such as nirsoft's WhoisThisdomain and see if the computer's information on the link agrees with actual registration of the link's website.

also, and this should go without saying empty all user history (IE7 alt+T D A yes) and run a safe mode virus and spyware scan (for virus use Clam Win Portable burned on a cd)

All Portable Programs mentioned here and many more (that can help with your issue) can thorughout the web but my favorites are no-install.com and portablefreeware.com both site are safe reliable and friendly communities(as is, IMHO, ITKnowledge Exchange)
