Ideas For Baselining Windows XP

Microsoft Windows, DataCenter

I need some ideas for creating an effective baseline of Windows XP Pro for our desktop systems here at work. I was wondering what some other people do to effectively assess the performance of their PC's before they are deployed. Also being able to save a report of some type after baselining and being able to compare these results overtime to ensure your desktops are always running their best. Thanks for any tips or suggestions. I am aware of the Windows System Monitor and performance Logs and Alerts just wondering if there is anything else available and/or what counters you guys use and is there an easy way to automate baselining from PC to PC.

I hope this question isn't confusing or too jumbled. Thanks for any feedback.

If you're referring to security configuration, I suggest that you check out www.cisecurity.org.

They've done a lot of work on baseline security configurations for many O/S's, including network hardware and such.

If you're looking for other baseline guidelines and such, I'd try to google it.

Thanks for the quick reply that’s a great link thanks. Actually my initial thought was more focused towarded baselining performance and tuning on the WinXP desktop, if anyone had anymore thoughts let me know. Thanks again for the security link.

If you are a company, you may have to pay for some of these. The leading performance benchmarks are SYSMark by BAPCO and Business Winstone from Veritest. This link has a list of perfomance benchmark tools that are pretty good. http://active-hardware.com/english/bench…. It breaks the benchmarks down into specific areas you want to evaluate.

Another good benchmarking tool is Sandra from Sisoft

If you have the same type systems, (All Micron Clientpro 325?s for example) once you get a good baseline, Ghost that image and then update the image periodically as various software patches are released. As you probably know Ghosting the image on the system can save you a lot of time rather than performing the same processes on each system individually. Also, if you are going to use Ghost you need to run a SID changer program or use Sysprep, so you don?t end up with a bunch of systems with the same SID.
