Perhaps this will work for you

    5**2           5 squared

    5**.5         5 raised to the .5 power

Thank Philpl1jb, I want to say that I use ** as power, or should I use the "POWER" function.
    My financial formula is:
    ((1 + t)**(1/12)) -1
    where t = anual rate

Either.  However, note the use of 1.0 in these formula.

In both cases 1/12 will be treaded as interger math where 1/12 is zero

1.0/12 is treated as floating point math and is .083333333

    power((1+6),(1.0/12)) -1

    ((1 + 6)**(1.0/12)) -1
