Yes, this is a goal, and with Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2, along with Operations Manager 2007 R2 and the Management Packs and Performance Resource Optimizations (PRO Tips) this is a reality. The PRO Tips can determine certain conditions and act on them in an automated fashion, so if the CPU utilization on a particular Hyper-V system goes high, it can automatically move VMs to another system with Live Migration (once you have all of the R2 products in place).

Wow.

Windows 2008, Hyper-V, SCVMM, MOM, Management Packs, and optimization tips. Seems like an awful lot of products to have to get installed, licensed, and working together properly to do what ESXi and vCenter do with DRS and VMotion, and a few checkboxes.

Maybe I’m missing something here…
