First, I would do some heavy purging to bring the size under control. Then I would finish the work of migrating out of the S/36 environment.

This is pushing 30-year old technology to its limits. I doubt that much more can be done if your sizes are getting this big.

If sizes are not that big, then some other problem is involved. More data on the physical attributes of the file and of your system would be needed.
