I joined an exchange 5.5 to exchange 2003 migration in progress and I am faced basically with the cleanup of remaining email accounts that could not be moved. I have at least 100 users who have AD accounts generated by the ADC which are disabled with functional 5.5 email boxes and I can not migrate their 5.5 mail accounts through AD. I saw the NOMAS tool and other KB articles addressing fixing functionality of mail flow but is adding the Self permission and altering the other attributes allow you to then enable those accounts, migrate the email to 2003 and then be able to have full AD and email functionality?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Hi,

We recently migrated from 5.5 to 2003 exchange server. It sounds like you have to use the AD account cleanup wizard to merge the duplicate accounts. We had to manually add the “self” account to some of our mail clients profile in AD after the migration. Some worked fine and we did not have to add the “self” account at all.

Remember, do not enable or delete the duplicate accounts the cleanup tool will automatically do this for you.

I am curious, you say these mailboxes are functional and yet the accounts are disabled in AD. How is that possible? When an account is disabled in AD the mailbox gets detached and is no longer accessible. What it sounds like to me is that you have many detached/disabled mailboxes left behind which of course you cannot move. Have you tried purging them instead? We just completed our migration from exchange 2003 to 2007 earlier this year. What I did was I left the most recently detached/disabled mailboxes on the exchange 2003 server until they reached the normal 30 day expiration date and if they did not purge automatically at that point as they should have I purged them manually and then uninstalled that server when they were all gone. I did not attempt to re-enable them or move them at all.
