I have a LTO 3 tape drive that does not read my LTO2 tapes is this normal? I thought they were backwards compatible. I can read the LTO2 tapes in the LTO2 drive but not vice versa. It seems to be letting me write to them but not read them.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

If the device is a certified quantum LTO3 device then the following will apply per the Quantum Website:

Quantum LTO-3 tape drive solutions offer industry-leading performance with 800GB* of capacity on a single cartridge and backup speeds of 324GB/hr*. Backward-compatible and interchangeable with all LTO generations and manufacturers, the LTO-3 offers outstanding investment protection in enterprise environments.

if i am not wrong it should not happen like that..it should be down ward compatibility…so means lto 3 can read lto 2..

can you try other lto2 tapes?

Yes, LTO is downward compatible. It can read/write a generation down and only read two generations down. So LTO-3 will read/write to LTO-2 and will read LTO-1.

I have a LTO 3 tape drive that does not read my LTO2 tapes... What happens when you try? A message of some kind? How do you actually try? I can read the LTO2 tapes in the LTO2 drive but not vice versa. I assume that there's a typo in that sentence someplace, but I'm not sure what it is, especially in light of the actual question. Is that intended to say "read the LTO3 tapes in the LTO2 drive"? Tom
