Are you saying that you can't get hyperlinks to work in Word & Outlook....and you are using IE8 on a Windows machine? It sounds like this may be a Microsoft Office problem, especially if it carried over into an Office upgrade from 2007 to 2010. People often have Office set ups configured to use Microsoft Word as their email editor - to check this:
    1. From the main Microsoft Outlook window, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
    2. Select or clear the Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages check box.

If you are using Word as the editor, hyperlinks may be turned on/off under File --> Options --> Proofing and click on AutoCorrect options. The tab labelled "AutoFormat As You Type"  has a check box in the top section (Replace as you type) and the very last box is "Internet and network paths with hyperlinks."

    Hope this helps.
