Another possibility could be the size of the print job. I’ve had a HP printer not print, without an error message, when the job was too big for the printers memory.

Another more obscure possibility is sending a PCL formatted print job to a PostScript only printer. With a PS print job two files get sent to the printer, one to set up the printer specifically for this job and one containing the actual data to be printed. If a PCL job (a single file) gets sent to the printer then you have the exact symptoms you describe where the lights blink for awhile, stop and nothing prints. I don’t recall details for the 5p but you might check the PCL vs PS config of your printer.

This problem sounds like either a fault in the print queue or the wrong page size for the hp printer.

Open the printer queue and check that no documents are waiting to be printed. If there are some trapped docs then delete the whole queue.

Check that the default printer is your latest laserjet printer. If you try to print with another driver then the printer will flash then nothing will happen.

Lastly if both of the above is ok then simply open a command window and directly pritn a single line of text. This will double check that your printer will work in text mode.

My favorite guess is that your default printer is not the latest driver that you have installed. good luck

I’m assuming the following:

1) The printer is installed directly to your workstation running Windows 2000 Pro.

2) You can get a print out from printing a test page from the Properties page of the printer.

3) You cannot print from another program.

If the above is true then I would try a different program from #3, look at the event viewer to see what it says about your print job, and try to print a config page like the previous poster suggest directly from the printer.

See if any of that gives you hints. Post your findings if you haven’t figured it out yet…
