The system is in restricted state and the operator who was trying to login into console DSP01 had disabled the DSP01 display device by giving incorrect password...how to login into the system? How can we vary on the DSP01? Significantly, these systems are connected to HMC. Is there an option to recover this from HMC?

I assume DSP01 is your operator console? I have never run into this myself. Did this happen after an IPL and trying to log back in?

Nope. this has not happened post IPL. prior to SAVSYS operations tried logging into DSP01(HMC Console Green Screen) and varied off DSP01 with invalid password attaempts to DSP01 console. is there a way to recover from this without IPL.

The fastest way might be to restart the system. I haven't found a useful way to send system commands to a restricted-state partition. . There is a TCP/IP subset that runs while the system is in restricted state (otherwise the HMC couldn't connect.) It might be possible to invoke some "fail safe" program that could receive and execute command strings. I haven't tried any such programming. . Tom

Does restarting HMC can fix this issue? Also, wanna confirm restarting HMC cause all partitions to be down??

Haven't run into the problem with DSP01 being varied off so I can't say that restarting the HMC would fix it or no (though I suspect not) but I can say the HMC can be restarted without downing any of your partitions.

Anyone with HMC should be able to test varying off DSP01 and watching results of restarting the HMC. As long as the system isn't in restricted state, it shouldn't be an issue since normal network access allows varying the device back on. . If a test LPAR exists, it could even be a more detailed test. . Tom
