How it works? I will make a backup copy of each of the server. Upgrade by install R7 to current R5 server and overwrite it? Or Install a fresh R7 copy? If install a fresh new R7 domino copy. How do I upgrade old data and templates? Names.nsf and so on? Im quite confuse. Anyone can help? Many thanks!

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

My experience with upgrading Domino servers has been that it’s gone very smoothly. Just run the new Domino server package over the top; it detects the existing version, replaces the parts as required, upgrades the public address book, and the server just runs. It’s generally recommended to upgrade incrementally, that is, R5 to R6 to R7, but we went from R4 to R6 without a problem. Since then, we’ve gone on to R7 and R8.

This is sort of correct but there are so many also things wrong with this...... Planning and testing needs to be taken into consideration. The Jump from 5 to 6 was huge in software and usage. The upgrade itself is a simple run the installation and let it do its work. This is true. The issues that you have to do is that there are allot of pre things to do and post things as well/ This is to stop data corruption etc. As this is live then you need to build a test environment. <-- not connected you yours in any way and then test.

    The IDEA is to upgrade the Domino Directory to the new version before you do any upgrade and make sure this does not effect you servers. Then upgrade your admin server..... Then SMTP Servers.... Then the rest. rule of thumb above. Here are some scripts to help. Run this on your servers before (pre) and after (post) running the upgrade. These will reduce the risk of corruption. pre_Upgrade.bat @echo off D: cd Lotusdomino nfixup names.nsf -f -v -l nfixup admin4.nsf -f -v -l nfixup events4.nsf -f -v -l nfixup statrep.nsf -f -v -l nfixup catalog.nsf -f -v -l nfixup ddm.nsf -f -v -l ncompact names.nsf -c -i ncompact admin4.nsf -c -i ncompact events4.nsf -c -i ncompact statrep.nsf -c -i ncompact catalog.nsf -c -i ncompact ddm.nsf -c -i echo Pre-upgrade process complete. Post_Upgrade.bat @echo off D: cd Lotusdomino ndesign -f admin4.nsf nfixup names.nsf -f -v -l nfixup admin4.nsf -f -v -l ncompact names.nsf -c -i ncompact admin4.nsf -c -i nupdall names.nsf -RX nupdall admin4.nsf -RX echo Post-upgrade process complete.

Test all your applications before upgrading the Clients and the servers because there are allot of changes to the Design code in the upgraded versions..... Some of your apps may not work.

There is one other large issue with Domino 7 over Domino 6.x and before (i.e. 5 in this case). The new RnRmgr for managing Rooms and Resource reservations. This must be handled specially and there are steps on line for this. Going straight from 5.x to 7.0.x is fine, but please make sure you read up on the RnRMgr changes first and plan accordingly.

Hi Gabe9527, Thank you for your information. This is very useful for me! As in your guideline. I will need to: 1. Testing application. 2. Pre upgrade steps. -by Gabe9527 3. Install Domino R7 Server on top of it. (Overwrite existing R5) 4. Post upgrade steps. -by Gabe9527 5. Testing application again. 6. Upgrade complete. Correct me if I'm wrong.. Appreciate !!

Gabe, good process. I'm confused, though, that you imply that the Domino Directory design should be upgraded before the admin server. I think that's just wrong. An older server could choke on the newer design. Is that not true?

The domino Directory is backward compatible. The only issue you will have with this is if you turn on any Domino 7 features to Run on a Domino 5 server. 1. Testing application. Create a test environment and copy your db's into it.... test they work and there are no issues. If they work for Normall every day then this may be enough but make sure you check everything to be on the safe side. 2. Pre upgrade steps. -by Gabe9527 take server that is to be upgraded down. Run the first script. 3. Install Domino R7 Server on top of it. (Overwrite existing R5) 4. Post upgrade steps. -by Gabe9527 Run these before you start the Domino Server. Start the Domino Server. 5. Testing application again. Make sure al is ok 6. Upgrade complete. This is very basic but yes.

On the Rooms and Resources.... basically it has to be setup as the New rooms and Resources etc. But on a lighter note to configure it is pretty simple.

Hi Gabe9527, Here i need your advise again. The IDEA is to upgrade the Domino Directory to the new version before you do any upgrade and make sure this does not effect you servers. 1.Could you please advise how to upgrade domino directory before do any upgrade? 2. I have server A as primary server. And the rest B, C and D server as secondary server. (All of the server is running on R5) Is there any problem if I upgrade server B to R7 before server A ? What is the impact? How to I ensure the server environment going smooth is I do upgrade Server B first? Please advise.

Gabe9527 is correct that upgrading the Directory first is recommended. This is an excerpt from the Lotus and Domino Wiki, followed by a link to the page. I don't know where a similar page would be describing how to upgrade to R7. I recommend opening a PMR and asking your questions there so you get pointed to the correct information. Excerpt: If you decide to upgrade the design of the Domino directory in your Domain in step 2 before upgrading any Domino Servers to 8.5.x, you will have to first get a copy of the Domino directory template (PUBNAMES.NTF). Install Domino 8.5.x on a test server and retrieve the template from there and copy to your admin client. Another option is to upgrade the design of the directory when you upgrade the Admin Server of the Domino directory to 8.5.x when all other system database designs are upgraded as well. Bsically how it works is..... get a copy of the new Domino Directory.....From a new server version. How every you do this. ie install test server and take it from there. Then you can change the inherit name (for easy and security. Then use this to change the DB design. ie File > Application > replace design. Admin server first.

After the installation of the R5 into new testing server. I had copy the whole domino R5 data ( from old server) to replace the fresh copy of the domino R5 server copy. When it start the domino server. It will stay long time at the 1st few line in the domino console. ( 1st few line is stated about the domino version.. and copy right reserved so on... ) After after 15mins. It appear nserver.exe crashed. Can any one help? This is new testing server. I dont think is caused by hardware. Anyone can give me advise? Thankyou.

Hi, I found the answer for the below problem. The data are too huge size and some how do not know how come it did not start and crashed nserver.exe when starting domino server. I try to remove the nsf file at once inside the data. And try to restart the domino. It works. So I had try to move in the data part by part and restart the domino every time some part of data move into. It finally able to start at domino. It just cant move all the data inside at once.
