Hello, i've set up a new domino server 8. I want to use it as a test server. Now i want to replicate my mail-file on the 7 server to the 8 server. I'd like to work on one computer with the 7 client with the 7 server and on another one with the 8 client on 8 server. Is this possible to do this and if yes, how can i do this?

Having your mail file co-exist on an R7 & R8 server is not in itself a problem, they can even be in the same domain but you will have to leave the design of the mail file at R7 or you are likely to have real problems, it therefore isn’t really a way to look at R8 mail.

You would be better to setup your r8 server with some test mail accounts which you only access using r8 client. The test server can still be in the same domain and the test users even registered in the master domino directory which will allow you to send mail between r7 & r8 mail files. This has the added advantage of giving you some confidence that r8 migration can be a gradual process rather than a big bang type migrate everyone in a weekend nightmare scenario which are administrators night mare projects.

You will have to have separate PCs for the two client versions. In past releases of Notes, there were unsupported methods for installing different versions of the client on a single PC, but we tried everything we could think of and cannot make a dual client install with Notes 8. I just re-read your original question and it almost looks like you were already planning to use separate machines for the two clients. If so, there should be no problem doing this. You will need to describe the problems you are having before I will know how to correctly answer your question. Finally, I question the architecture decision to allow a test server to replicate with a production environment. I would keep your test and production environments completely separate.

I want to use 2 different computers with different client versions. The 7-client is connected to the 7 server and the 8-client connected to the 8 server. My production enviroment is the 7-server. I want to replicate my mail-database to the 8 server. So i can work with both clients, each connected to their "own" server. So i can test and learn the new possibilities of the 8 server. I just don't know how to replicate my database between those 2 different servers. They are not running in the same domain. I think i need to set up a kind of a connectiondocument between those 2 servers and a cross certificate. i just don't know how to do this.

I don't like to create cross certificates between test and production domains. What I have done in the past is to make a local replica of the database using one ID, add the other ID to the access control on my own machine, then switch IDs (on the same machine) and create a server replica of the database on the other server. Then on the second machine, I create a local replica. When I am done, I have a local that is replicating to the correct server and IDs that have rights on the appropriate server, but no interaction between the servers themselves. This way, I only test the clients with the exact same mail records without affecting the server configuration that could possibly open up communication between them that is not truly part of what I want to test. Hope this helps.

You should be able to replicate the mail file once you have cross certified the two domains but I suggest that you maintain the mail file with the 7.0.3 design, you should have no problem readng or using a 7.0.3 mail file using notes 8 but the other way around is really not a good idea. If you want to really explore 8 then set up a series of mail files using 8/ 8.01 and keep the two environments completely seperate.

Thank you very much for your advice. I think that i'm goïng to use a (new) different mailfile to explore the Notes 8 version.
