Sometimes you get asked a question and you just have to wonder if the system in question is stolen or not. What we do in computer security gives most of us the skills to be on either side of the law.
Those of us that are white hats would love to help but we are not sure if the help we give is going to end up in the wrong hands.
So I have a little trick I like to use when someone local to me asks this same type of qiuestion but I don't know them.
I have done some work with the local police and I tell the guy I will help them, but only if they will bring it to me at the local police station to work on it. Some people show up with the machine and after determining that the machine is not stolen I remove the passwords.
I expect your local police have an IT department or an electronic crime squad. Feel free to take the system to them, explain why you are there and if all is on the up and up they should be able to help you.
