I want to know how to perform a system recovery on Windows 8 system which may have been updated to 8.1 with the service pack that was available for a short time before being pulled. I already started the recovery process and the machine is saying please wait and doing this for 18 hours now. What do I do now?

System Restore is automatically configured when you install Windows 8, you may want to change its settings

How did u start recovery process ! As far as my knowledge, there is a Restore option in Control Panel. There r 3 option in which two may work for ur current query. Either u create a recovery disk or can configure system restore option. Here u can use system restore as a recovery toolif u meant system recovery/ restore, so don't put the same in win 8.1. It has its own system files/ settings. U can simply click General > Update & Recovery > Recovery and then u have to choose on recovery option that u would like to do.

I had this is issue occur when I upgraded to Win 8.1 from Win 8.  The upgrade failed when it was updating device drivers.  It went into the system recovery and never came out of it.  It also destroyed all the restore points so there was nothing that it could go back to.  Putting the Window's 8.1 DVD in the drive also accomplished nothing as it would not load a recovery option.  Nor did the upgrade move all the apps over from Win 8 to Win 8.1.  They were also missing.  I had backed up all the critical data files to a flash drive so I did not lose any of that.  I then had to start over and reinstall everything.  If you cannot get to the restore options, then that is what you will have to do.
