A link file is a basically a shortcut of main file. It can be opened by same application which helps to open the main file. For example, if there is photoshop installed, an icon crated on desktop which is a reference of main photoshop.exe file which is under program files folder. If the icon deleted, photoshop still opens through its exe file. So, what type of file is there and how did you get this link?

    Hi there,

The file is a .lnk file that was copied and pasted from a network server to which I no longer have access.  My understanding is that I have to have administrative rights to be able to override it to open.  The files are mostly excel and word docs.  Thank you for your response and sorry for such a late reply.

If the files are on the network server, then you have to ask the network admin person for more help. Probably it is a permission issue. You have proper permission to open/ access those files provided the original files are still there.

LNK file is a pointer that points to another file that has content.

Hi Jaideep, What exactly is meant by a "pointer" file? Some of my files that are LNK files do in fact have an accompanying word or excel file that is true but some do not. Why is that?

    Thank you,

    Natalie
