MCSE is nice, Now try to get CISSP .
Also you will need some hands on experience in the IT Security field. You may have to start at the bottom performing very basic security related tasks … vulnerability identification, vulnerability remediation, various ways of encrypting data, etc.
Good luck.

MCSE, CISSP etc. are microsoft and cisco domain specific only , for information security specialisation go for CISA, CISP certifications that are specific

A long-term successful career in network security will stem from you understanding the basics of TCP/IP and how computers function at the bit and byte level but, more importantly, you working hard on yourself, networking with the right people, and improving your soft skills like I discuss in my Getting Started in Security audio program. Best of luck!

In researching an answer to your query, I observed to my dismay that our information security cert survey hasn't been updated since May 2008 (fortunately, the landscape hasn't changed a whole lot since then). But you will definitely want to check it out at http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid14_gci1312896,00.html. This will provide information about the whole field of infosec certs, and provide our recommendations as to which might be worth pursuing further. HTH, and thanks for posting, --Ed--
