Windows 8 Error Code 0x0000005D
I've been trying to install Windows 8 on my Dell Dimension 4600.  I keep getting an error.
error code 0x0000005D
Parameters: 0x030F0209
0X75EE547
0X49656E69
0XC65746E

I have upgraded my BIOS version to the newest version and enabled hyper-threading.  The research I've done suggests enabling the NX (“No eXecute bit”), or the equivalent XD (“eXecute Disabled”) in the BIOS.  However I can't find where in the BIOS this might be located.

See this thread from Dell Support forum. Unfortunately, it does not look like it is possible to install Win 8 on Dimension 4600. The processor and/or the bios does not support NX command.

I have a Dell Dimension  4600 and tried 3 times before to install Windows 8 Pro 64bit.  It always gave me the error for the execute bit not being set.  So after much research,  I went to Dell’s Support site for the Dimension 4700C, and downloaded it BIOS update:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/GetDriver/InitiateSingleFileDownload?fileId=2731111125&driverId=R115122&isInstallAvailable=False&isKCSArticleTobeShown=False&categoryId=BI&returnUrl=%2Fsupport%2Fdrivers%2Fus%2Fen%2F04%2FProduct%2Fdimension-4700c%3FretrieveState%3DTrue&isUSDownload=true

Now, I know what you are thinking.  I been in the business of computer repair since 1987 and I have NEVER cross flashed a BIOS with another version because it would be most likely that it would not work, or it would brick the motherboard.

Well, I did it and then in the Security setting of the BIOS, sure enough, there was a place to set the execute bit.  I did that and have installed WIndows 8 32 bit and 64 bit and Windows 7 all on it without any issues.   Triple boot now……easy…….

MY DELL DIMENSION 4600 LIVES……….although now when it boots, it tells me it is a 4700C……..what are the chances?

Enabling it in BIOS is one of multiple possible steps. Next would be ensuring that the specific CPU model you have is even capable of supporting it after it's enabled. You might need a new CPU. And that's not necessarily the end of it. You have an old PC that appears to have at least some hardware components that aren't appropriate for Windows 8. Replace the PC, or avoid Windows 8. -- Tom

Unfortunately, it does not look like it is possible to install Win 8 on Dimension 4600.   The 4600 series was available from 2003 into 2010. The BIOS chips and CPUs changed over time, and different production batches had slightly varying features depending on what parts vendors had available that year. Threads can be found that show apparent successes with 4600s.   Here's one thread that describes a success with a 4600i (a more basic 'introductory' version) and Windows 8 (dev preview):   http://forum.desktopreview.com/dell/242743-dell-dimension-4600i-external-boat-anchor.html   It starts as a Win7 thread. It includes mentions of various hardware upgrades and eventually describes a WinXP/Win7/Win8 multi-boot system. All of the upgrades are valid for the 4600 series. A 4600 from a late production run could be close.   It appears to be possible. I'm pretty sure it would take persistance and knowledge.   Tom
