I do work as a contractual operator and we are being deployed to a client.

That helps in understanding your situation. But it makes it more difficult to help. Your client is paying for you while you check this every hour. There doesn't seem to be any reason to check. There isn't much more I can add other than you seem to want a better way to do it. The other parts of your group needs to step up.

I do work as a contractual operator and we are being deployed to a client. so im very hesitant to do this on the machine coz I'm still lacking on experience on how this things are done. and coz our support is not really that cooperative with the operations so this is really just on me wanting to make our operations better by knowing this things.

I haven't found any reference to IBM's Virtual Loaner Program outside of Partner World for ISVs. It might not be available in any form without a special contract, e.g., Consult Line. You probably aren't eligible outside of something like Consult Line.

But I still don't understand why you can't do the testing on your own system. There isn't any reason that the QSTGLOWLMT and QSTGLOWACN system values shouldn't be set appropriately on your system. Those by themselves should eliminate any need for regular checking of storage usage (which is a waste of time). Set QSTGLOWACN to *CRITMSG or *REGFAC and have either a useful contact message queue or registered exit program. The system won't be affected in any negative way (unless you create an exit program that messes with your system). Likewise, a Management Central disk storage monitor won't cause problems (unless you make it call a program or run a command that messes with your system).

If you cause a program to run that does a PWRDWNSYS or some other function, obviously that would disrupt your operation. But that will be true of every single program on your system. This is no different from all of your programs or all of the commands you run.

Why is there any problem using the system in your office?

...a free emulator where i can try this...

Emulator? Are you thinking of a whole system emulator? If you have IBM support, you might have access to an IBM virtual test system. I'm not sure there's a good way to use features like Management Central, though. It should be possible, but you'll have to do it through a VPN.

But why wouldn't anyone let you use features supplied by the system? They are there for you to use.

but can you tell me how can i perform this ...

That's why I linked to the documentation. The documentation tells you how to call the API. If you code calls to the API and have problems, we can work through them.

You shouldn't be using WRKSYSSTS unless you expect to be changing work management parameters. Use DSPSYSSTS instead.

And you should be using Management Central monitors instead checking yourself. Also, the ASP threshold values should be set to send messages when the storage passes the threshold limits that you want. There should be no reason to check manually since the system will tell you automatically.

That depends on how you are tracking it. I used to run a weekly job that logged statistics from the Retrieve System Status (QWCRSSTS) API. It'd be easy enough to run it hourly, I suppose, if it was important for some reason. But if it was important, I'd probably just run a Management Central monitor to do the tracking for me. If you aren't tracking it and logging results, you can't refer back to it. -- Tom
