It is highly recommended that you not do this, as your system performance will greatly suffer as external hard drives are not anywhere near as fast as internal drives.

Not to mention that it is unsupported.

Before trying to boot Windows 7 Operating System from an external storage device, you need to setup some configurations in the BIOS particularly the boot device priority. This would allow the computer system to detect your external storage device before any hardware installed like the primary hard disk and CD or DVD ROM Drive.
